Breeders' Cup Mile Race & Pace Analysis

Breeders' Cup Mile

When the 2005 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships take place on October 29, Saturday, champion horses from all over North America and as far as Europe and Japan will be pitted against one another. Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, which has the world's biggest dirt race course of any thoroughbred track, will play host to eight major races on a single championship day card: Breeders' Cup Classic, Distaff, Filly & Mare Turf, Juvenile, Juvenile Fillies, Mile, Sprint, Turf. Breeders' Cup Mile race and pace analysis point to strong contenders being Artie Schiller, Dubawi (Ireland), Leroidesanimaux (Brazil), Proclamation (Ireland), Rakti (Great Britain), Singletary, Soviet Song (Ireland), Starcraft (New Zealand), Three Valleys, Valixir (Ireland), and Whipper.

The Breeders' Cup Mile will be dominated by closers, some of them deep closers, but look for the pacesetters early on. Early speed should not be discounted albeit the Mile is run on turf. Race contenders who have gone further and won in wire-to-wire fashion against full fields will set honest fractions. A field this size could be fairly spread out in the early going, and Artie Schiller will be one of those stalking the speed early. has a great running style and always runs his race. The Mile sets up well for competing horses like Artie Schiller, given the pace and form.

Another consideration of worth are race contenders who have found trouble but still managed to hit the board. A good example is Singletary, who has seen his share of trouble but consistently found a way to hit the board with turf horses. Singletary began as a longshot and went on to win the 2004 Mile. Final points to observe are who has been running in larger fields against the world's turf horses, and which horses are well traveled and been running various tracks and distances. One such horse is France's Six Perfections, who has been vying against the best turf horses of Europe at some very big fields. Six Perfections won the 2003 Mile and placed third in 2004.
